Turkish police arrested more than 120 people suspected of links to the Islamic State terrorist group during raids in Ankara and Istanbul on Tuesday, Interfax reported, citing the Associated Press.
Specifically, in Istanbul, police simultaneously searched 114 addresses on Tuesday, detaining 110 suspects. In Ankara, 17 people were detained, including 11 foreigners. Police found evidence linking these individuals to ISIS militants in conflict zones abroad.
Some of those detained are linked to a shootout that occurred the previous day in Yalova province; others, according to prosecutors, were planning attacks for Christmas and New Year's.
A number of individuals are suspected of collecting money under the guise of charity and transferring funds to ISIS in Syria.
Yesterday, it was reported that three police officers were killed and eight were wounded during a raid against ISIS militants in northwestern Turkey's Yalova province. According to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, security forces killed six militants during the operation.
Last week, police arrested 115 members of a group who were planning attacks during Christmas and New Year.
ISIS has carried out several terrorist attacks in Turkey in recent years, including the New Year's Eve shooting at an Istanbul nightclub on January 1, 2017, which killed 39 people, and the 2016 attacks at Ataturk Airport that killed 45 people.
