The State Scientific Institution "Glacier Research Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan" will be transformed into a fully-fledged Institute for Glacier and Cryosphere Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan. This proposal is contained in the annual address of President Emomali Rahmon to the Majlisi Oli (Parliament), according to the press service of the CIS Executive Committee.
According to Academician Abdulhamid Kayumov, this is not a spontaneous move, but rather fits seamlessly into the state's consistent policy of institutionally strengthening the scientific foundations of environmental safety and builds on the Center's significant achievements already achieved. Tajikistan, with its vast glaciers covering over 9,000 square kilometers, which account for up to 60% of Central Asia's water resources, has long positioned itself as a global leader in cryosphere conservation. The State Program for Glacier Research and Conservation for 2010-2030, as well as the Law "On Glacier Protection" (2024), create the legal framework for expanding scientific research in this area.
"From a scientific perspective, transforming the Center into an Institute is not simply an administrative step—it is an objective necessity, dictated by the contemporary challenges of climate science and the practice of state environmental management," the scientist concluded.
