Construction of a railway connecting Panjakent, Tajikistan, and Samarkand, Uzbekistan, is in its final stages, according to the Embassy of Tajikistan in Uzbekistan.
Tajikistan's Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Abdujabbor Rahmonzoda, visited the construction site of the Samarkand-Urgut railway line, one of which will extend to Panjakent. According to the diplomatic mission, construction work has already been completed 200 meters beyond the Jonboy-Sarazm border crossing, and the route continues toward Urgut.
Of the total 55-kilometer railway line, 38 kilometers have been fully constructed to date. Train service to Urgut is expected to begin by the end of August.
As part of the intergovernmental protocol between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, it is planned to build three kilometers of railway track within the territory of Penjikent, from the border to a section designated by the government of Tajikistan.
The project's implementation was discussed during a meeting between Ambassador Abdujabbor Rahmonzoda and Samarkand Region Governor Adiz Boboev. The parties also discussed prospects for expanding economic and trade cooperation between the regions—Sughd Region of Tajikistan and Samarkand Region of Uzbekistan.
The meeting also discussed a creative tour of Samarkand region artists to Dushanbe, timed to coincide with the celebration of the 34th anniversary of Tajikistan's independence. The Tajik side's proposals were met with interest and support.
The construction of the railway will be an important step in strengthening transport and economic ties between the two countries and the regions of Central Asia.
