The leaders of the eight Nordic and Baltic countries stated that negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine are only possible with Kyiv's full participation and after a ceasefire. This was stated in a joint statement by the Nordic-Baltic 8 (NB8) alliance, published on August 10.
The document, signed by the leaders of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden, notes that an end to Russian aggression is only possible through consistent pressure on Moscow, continued support for Ukraine, and the pursuit of “decisive diplomacy.”
"The people of Ukraine must have the freedom to determine their own future. The path to peace cannot be forged without Ukraine's voice. No decisions about Ukraine without Ukraine, and no decisions about Europe without Europe," the statement emphasized.
The leaders of the NB8 countries confirmed their readiness to contribute to the search for a “just and lasting peace based on the principles of the UN Charter, the Helsinki Accords and international law.”
Amid preparations for the meeting between Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Alaska, the European Union voiced a similar position. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas stated that any agreement with Moscow "must not become a springboard for further Russian aggression."
According to Bloomberg, European leaders intend to discuss the situation with Trump before his meeting with Putin. A meeting of EU foreign ministers to agree on further steps on Ukraine is scheduled for August 11.
