The European Union plans to approve a new, 19th package of restrictive measures against Russia in September. This was announced by European Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta at a briefing in Brussels.
According to her, the details of the sanctions being prepared are not yet being disclosed, as the contents of such packages are traditionally kept secret until they are approved. "We do not comment on individual measures until they are officially adopted," Podesta noted.
The exception was the 18th sanctions package, approved in July, which European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had previously called one of the toughest ever.
Earlier, on August 11, EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas stated that work on a new package of restrictive measures was underway due to Russia's refusal to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine. This statement came after an extraordinary meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.
Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, the European Union has already imposed 18 sanctions packages against Russia, covering the financial sector, trade, transport, energy, technology exports, and personal restrictions on individuals and legal entities.
