Kazakhstan continues to replace old banknotes with new ones. The National Bank of Kazakhstan has announced the dates when the old 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 tenge banknotes will be withdrawn from circulation, Tengrinews.kz reports.
The National Bank reminded that new banknotes in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, and 10,000 tenge are already in circulation. The following deadlines have been set for the end of parallel circulation for the old banknotes:
for banknotes of 2,000 tenge denomination – until June 24, 2026;
for banknotes with a denomination of 10,000 tenge – until June 27, 2026;
for banknotes with a denomination of 1,000 tenge – until March 27, 2027.
Note: Parallel (or simultaneous) circulation of new and old banknotes is a standard practice used by central banks when introducing updated banknote designs or new denominations. This is a period during which both banknote versions (old and new) have equal legal force as a means of payment and can be used for settlements, payments, and transfers without any restrictions. This parallel circulation is introduced to ensure a smooth transition, avoid public panic, allow time for adaptation (for example, updating ATMs and cash register equipment), and prevent economic disruptions. Old banknotes are not withdrawn abruptly, but are gradually phased out naturally (due to wear, contamination, or returns to banks) until their share in circulation is reduced to a minimum.
In addition, the National Bank reminded that, starting September 24, 2025, the parallel circulation of 5,000 tenge banknotes of the 2011 design will cease.
"After the end of the parallel circulation period, that is, from September 25, 2025, all banks and Kazpost will exchange old-style banknotes for new-style banknotes for three years, and branches of the National Bank will do so indefinitely," the National Bank clarified.
