US President Donald Trump on Friday officially changed the name of the US defense department from the US Department of Defense to the Department of War, Interfax reports.
"This is a more appropriate name, especially given the current situation in the world," Trump said on Friday while signing the corresponding order at the White House.
For his part, Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth welcomed Trump's decision. "We will train warriors, not just defensive fighters," he declared.
The order also calls for renaming the Pentagon's briefing room to the Pentagon Military Wing and changing the department's website and signage.
Trump first announced his intention to change the name of the Defense Department in August.
"We call it the Ministry of Defense, but between us, I think we're going to change the name," the president told reporters on August 25.
However, The Wall Street Journal previously claimed that, already in the first weeks of Trump's second term, the Pentagon began working on "legislative proposals" that would allow for changes to the agency's name and the title of its leader, bypassing the stage of approval for these actions by the US Congress.
