The number of rare animal species in Tajikistan has increased significantly over the past ten years, according to the country's Statistics Agency.
According to the agency, the markhor population increased from 1,900 to 6,800 individuals. The Marco Polo sheep population increased from 20,400 to 29,000 during this period, while the snow leopard population increased from 350 to 500.
The Agency recalled that in 2023, at the initiative of Tajikistan, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution according to which May 24 is annually celebrated as International Markhor Day.
The census of rare animals was conducted at the request of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon. During a meeting with staff of the Committee for Environmental Protection, the head of state instructed that special attention be paid to biodiversity conservation.
It is reported that the Committee and other relevant structures have been instructed to continue work on restoring and increasing the population of rare animal and plant species based on the Red Data Book data.
