On the night of October 5, Russia launched a massive attack on several regions of Ukraine, including western oblasts, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He stated that approximately 50 missiles, including Kinzhal missile systems, and approximately 500 attack drones were used against the country.
Nine regions of Ukraine came under fire: Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, Odesa, and Kirovohrad. Five people were killed and about ten were injured in the attacks.
"The Russians have again targeted our infrastructure, everything that ensures normal life for people. We need more reliable defense and rapid implementation of all defense agreements, especially regarding air defense systems, to render this aerial terror pointless. A unilateral ceasefire in the skies is possible, and it could pave the way for genuine diplomacy," Zelenskyy wrote on social media.
In the Lviv region, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES), four people were killed and four more were injured. "The Russians terrorized the region with combined strikes for over five hours. Residential buildings and other structures were damaged. Emergency services, including rescuers, medics, police, and SES psychologists, are working continuously at the sites of the impacts, providing assistance to the victims," the agency reported.
Lviv Regional Military Administration Head Maksym Kozytskyi clarified that four people were killed in the village of Lapaivka. The strike hit a residential area: one house was completely destroyed and eight were partially damaged. Six people were injured in the region. After 4:00 AM, Lviv was attacked by attack drones, and an hour later, cruise missiles were launched at the city.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi reported that part of the city was without power, and public transportation was temporarily suspended. Traffic was later restored. The mayor also noted a fire in the Sparrow Industrial Park, which has no military purpose. The blaze destroyed warehouses containing products, including clothing from the Polish company LPP and tobacco products. Poland scrambled fighter jets in the Lviv region at the time of the attack.
In the Ivano-Frankivsk region, Russian strikes hit critical infrastructure. One person was injured, and three private homes and a rowing facility were damaged, the regional administration reported. In the Nadvirna district, three residential buildings and two outbuildings were damaged.
One woman was killed and ten people were injured in the Zaporizhzhia region, according to Ivan Fedorov, head of the OVA. Eight multi-story buildings, eight private homes, and non-residential buildings were damaged. More than 290 customers were left without gas due to damaged gas pipelines. Zaporizhzhia and its surrounding areas suffered the brunt of the damage.
In the Vinnytsia region, a strike on an industrial civilian facility was reported. There were no casualties, and emergency services are working on the scene. In the Chernihiv region, strikes on critical infrastructure were recorded, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
