The Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan announced the implementation of a sectoral program to improve rural roads, aimed at improving transport links in the country's regions, the ministry's press service reported.
As President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon noted in his Address to the Majlisi Oli on December 28, 2024, in 2024 alone, more than 2,000 kilometers of local roads were repaired and reconstructed using all funding sources, including funds from entrepreneurs and the active participation of the country's residents.
As part of the rural road improvement program, the Gissar-Ayni village road was overhauled, fully paved, and opened to traffic on September 25, 2025. In the Yavan district of the Khatlon region, with the support of local authorities, businesses, and residents, three kilometers of roads were overhauled in the villages of Verkhniy Chuchu, Nizhniy Chuchu, and Yakatut in the Dakhan rural jamoat.
Over the 34 years of state independence, Tajikistan has built thousands of kilometers of modern roads, dozens of kilometers of tunnels, and hundreds of bridges that meet international standards. These achievements have improved transport links between regions and made the country an important transit hub in Central Asia.
Despite significant progress in the construction and reconstruction of major highways, many rural communities in the country still lack high-quality roads. Therefore, two years ago, at the direction of the President of Tajikistan, the Ministry of Transport developed and approved the "Program for the Development of Improved Rural Roads for 2023–2028."
The program is financed from five sources: the republican budget, investment projects, the budget of local authorities, funds from domestic entrepreneurs, and the method of mutual assistance among local residents (khashar).
Over two years and eight months, using all funding sources, 3,344.5 km of local roads, residential streets, and inter-farm roads were repaired, of which 1,418.7 km were paved with asphalt and 1,925.8 km with gravel. In addition, 77 bridges with a total length of 1,196 meters and 21 drainage pipes with a total length of 192 meters were restored.
In his Address to Parliament on December 28, 2024, the President emphasized: "In recent years, local road repair and construction have intensified. In 2024 alone, using all funding sources, particularly from entrepreneurs and patriotic residents, more than 2,000 kilometers of local roads were repaired and reconstructed, and the construction and reconstruction of 23 bridges was completed, costing over 1 billion somoni."
Road improvement work continues in all cities and districts of the country and is under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan, ensuring the efficient use of resources and the timely completion of projects.
