Large-scale international scientific research will begin in Tajikistan in 2025 on the country's largest glacier, Vanjakh. According to the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan, the relevant agreements were reached during a meeting with a group of foreign scientists who arrived in the country to prepare for the field stage of the research, the press service of the CIS Executive Committee reported.
"At the moment, most of the equipment has already been delivered to the highland region. In the area of the Tanimas River (Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region), automatic stations are operating, providing continuous data collection," the Academy of Sciences noted.
As part of the upcoming expedition, scientists plan to install additional meteorological and glaciological equipment, as well as complete the installation of elements of a comprehensive monitoring system. The research will be aimed at studying glaciation processes, hydrometeorological conditions, and the impact of dust deposits on glacier degradation.
“The data collected will play a key role in understanding climate change and ensuring sustainable management of the region’s water resources,” the scientific department emphasized.
Work on the glacier will begin in the coming weeks. The new data is expected to provide important insights into the state of Central Asian glaciers and forecast future climate trends.
