On April 30, 2026, in the city of Levakant, Tajikistan's Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Daler Juma, visited key hydraulic structures, including the headworks of the Vakhsh and Shurobod main canals, as well as spillway structures, as part of a working visit to Khatlon Region. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources.
During the inspection of the facilities, it was noted that the Vakhsh main canal, which is important for the irrigation and energy systems, was commissioned in 1964.

Currently, this canal supplies water to over 99,000 hectares of agricultural land in the cities and districts of Bokhtar, Kushoniyon, Vakhsh, Jaloliddin Balkhi, Dusti, and Jaykhun. Furthermore, the canal plays a vital role in ensuring the stable operation of the Sharshara and Markazi hydroelectric power plants.
Taking into account the long service life and wear and tear of the equipment, the hydraulic structures will undergo a major reconstruction from 2025.

The work is being carried out within the framework of the project "Improving Water Resources and Irrigation Management in Tajikistan", which is being implemented by the Fergana Valley Water Resources Management Project Management Center.
According to the data provided, as of April 30, 2026, more than 80 percent of the planned work had been completed.
