US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania welcomed King Charles III of Great Britain and Queen Camilla to the White House as they began a four-day state visit to the United States.
As Western media outlets note, the visit is historic: it is Charles III's first trip to the United States as monarch and the first state visit by a British monarch since 2007. It coincides with the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The welcoming ceremony took place at the South Portico of the White House. On the first day of the visit, the two sides also toured the gardens of the American presidential residence.
A detail on Queen Camilla's outfit drew particular attention: a brooch depicting the intersecting flags of the United States and Great Britain. The piece was given to Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to the United States in 1957.
According to British and American media, the visit comes at a difficult time for relations between the two countries. Tensions have been noted between British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Donald Trump.
Despite this, media reports indicate that both sides are seeking to highlight and strengthen bilateral ties amid ongoing international challenges, including tensions surrounding NATO and foreign policy differences.
The King and Queen later attended a garden reception at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C., attended by more than 600 guests.
Charles III is expected to address a joint session of the US Congress on Tuesday, followed by a state dinner at the White House. His subsequent itinerary includes a trip to New York.
