The seventh international gushtingiri wrestling tournament, the Dushanbe Chairman's Cup, will take place on April 5 at the Tennis Palace and Water Sports Complex in Dushanbe. The competition is timed to coincide with Capital Day, reports NIAT Khovar.
As part of the tournament, athletes will compete in the weight categories of up to 65 kg, 78 kg, 86 kg and over 86 kg among men, and up to 70 kg among women.
The competition will feature renowned wrestlers from more than 25 countries vying for prizes.
The tournament's total prize pool is $100,000. First place will receive $10,000, second place $5,000, and third place $2,500.
The tournament is being held based on a decree by the Chairman of the City of Dushanbe with the aim of popularizing and developing sports, ensuring widespread physical education, and improving the health of the capital's residents.
The Tajik national wrestling style, Gushtingiri, is one of the most widespread sports among the Tajik people. In the past, this form of wrestling was most often performed at weddings and other special events.
In the past, national wrestling lent a special solemnity to the holiday of Navruz. It was a sport and a tradition that made men eagerly await Navruz. Thus, wrestling and Navruz are inextricably linked.
The Tajik national wrestling, Gushtingiri, is one of the most common types of wrestling, from which such types as judo, sambo, kurash and belt wrestling originate.
Gushtingiri holds a prominent place in society and is one of the primary means of promoting physical culture. In recent years, this sport has been developing thanks to the initiatives and support of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon.
