A large arsenal of weapons, which, according to investigators, was planned for use in a coup d'état, was seized in Kyrgyzstan's Osh region. This was reported by the press center of the State Committee for National Security (GKNB), according to TASS.
"The State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic, during a series of operational and investigative measures to suppress the activities of organized crime groups in the Osh region, discovered a large cache of firearms and ammunition," the agency said in a statement.
Investigators have evidence that the arsenal was prepared for the commission of particularly serious crimes, including destabilizing the socio-political situation in the republic. According to the State Committee for National Security, the perpetrators were awaiting an opportune moment, amid the deteriorating domestic political and socio-economic situation, to carry out an unconstitutional overthrow of the current government.
The following weapons and ammunition were confiscated: 12 Kalashnikov assault rifles and 11 magazines from them, 2 Beretta and Makarov pistols, 700 rounds of 7.62 mm caliber ammunition, 2 smoothbore sawed-off shotguns, 58 and 66 rounds of 9×19 mm and 9×18 mm caliber ammunition, respectively, as well as 8 gun cleaning products.
According to the State Committee for National Security, the criminals were counting on the support of crime bosses from transnational groups to reestablish a base for organized crime in Kyrgyzstan. If the political situation became favorable, the goal was to stage an armed coup and subsequently install a politician controlled by the criminal underworld.
Furthermore, the arsenal may have been used in support of international terrorist and extremist organizations. The weapons have been sent for ballistic and forensic examination, and the investigation into the leaders, organizers, and sponsors of this activity is ongoing.
