China's Ministry of Defense has lodged a strong protest with the United States over its planned $11.1 billion arms sale to Taiwan, ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin said on Friday, according to chinadaily.com.cn .
According to him, this US move seriously undermines strategic mutual trust between China and the US. The ministry spokesperson made the statement after the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced approval of the largest arms sale to Taiwan to date.
Jiang Bin emphasized that the US announcement of large-scale arms sales to the Taiwan region of China is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the three joint communiqués between China and the US. He stated that this seriously undermines China's sovereignty and security interests, and sends a strong signal to separatist forces advocating for Taiwan independence.
"China expresses strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition and has sent strong notes to the United States," Jiang said. He noted that China's complete reunification is an irreversible historical process that no force can stop.
The ministry spokesman also said that separatist forces advocating "Taiwan independence" are using ordinary people's funds to profit from American arms dealers, threatening the safety and well-being of Taiwanese citizens.
Jiang Bin criticized the separatists' attempts to achieve "independence" by force, noting that this would only lead to their own destruction. He emphasized that the US has repeatedly broken its word in supporting "Taiwan independence," which "will ultimately backfire."
A Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman called on the US side to sincerely honor its commitment not to support "Taiwan independence" and immediately stop arms sales to Taiwan.
"The People's Liberation Army will continue to strengthen its combat readiness and take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and resolutely oppose separatist activities aimed at 'Taiwan independence' and external interference," Jiang said.
