During a massive attack on the night of November 8, Russia struck substations supplying electricity to Ukraine's Khmelnytskyi and Rivne nuclear power plants. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha announced this on the X network, calling on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to urgently convene its Board of Governors.
"During today's attacks, Russia again targeted substations that supply electricity to the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne nuclear power plants. These were not random strikes, but well-planned ones. Russia is deliberately jeopardizing nuclear safety in Europe. We call for an urgent meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors to address these unacceptable risks," Sybiga wrote.
The minister also called on all states that value nuclear security, including China and India, to demand that Russia cease its reckless attacks on nuclear power facilities, which could have catastrophic consequences. "Global pressure must be exerted to force Moscow to end its nuclear blackmail," he emphasized.
The IAEA previously confirmed Russian strikes on substations critical to the safety of Ukraine's nuclear power plants. Personnel at the South Ukraine and Khmelnytskyi NPPs lost access to one of the external power lines. At the Rivne NPP, the power of two of the four units was reduced at the request of the grid operator.
Furthermore, Centrenergo reported that the Russian strike on the night of November 8th resulted in the loss of power generation at all energy facilities. According to the company, missiles and drones were aimed at thermal power plants that were already being restored after previous attacks. Centrenergo emphasized that restoration and repair work at the thermal power plants will be repeated.
