On the night of September 1, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 struck Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan, killing at least 250 people and injuring over 500, according to the country's authorities, NBC reports.

Afghan Ministry of Public Health spokesman Sharafat Zaman announced the launch of a large-scale rescue operation involving hundreds of specialists and volunteers. Debris removal and the search for victims are ongoing.

The districts most severely damaged were Nurgal, Tsavkay, Vatapur, Manugay, and Chapa-Dara. According to the television channel, several villages in Nurgal district were completely buried. There are concerns that hundreds of people may be trapped under the rubble.

The country's authorities have called on the international community to assist in the aftermath of the natural disaster. Emergency services continue to assess the extent of the destruction, provide medical assistance to the victims, and evacuate residents from the most vulnerable areas.

The death toll and injuries could rise as rescuers continue to search for people under the rubble.
