Consultations between member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on the situation in Afghanistan will be held in the capital of Tajikistan in September. This was announced by the organization's Secretary General, Nurlan Yermekbayev, in an interview with RIA Novosti.
"It is planned to conduct a comprehensive exchange of views on the current situation in Afghanistan and its impact on the region," he noted.
According to Yermekbaev, key topics of the meeting will include ensuring regional security, promoting sustainable development, and interaction with the Afghan authorities.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was established in 2001. It comprises Russia, Tajikistan, Belarus, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan. Afghanistan and Mongolia have observer status, and Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and Sri Lanka have dialogue partner status.
