In Tajikistan, criminal cases in which sentences were handed down solely for "likes" and other digital reactions on social media may be reviewed. This was announced by Rustam Mirzozoda, Chairman of the Supreme Court, at a press conference in Dushanbe.
According to him, current legislation provides for the possibility of reviewing such cases, but in practice, most defendants in such cases were also prosecuted under other charges. "If a verdict is handed down solely in a case involving 'likes and reposts,' the courts are willing to reconsider such decisions," Mirzozoda noted.
The head of the Supreme Court clarified that, to date, no appeals have been received by the country's judicial bodies on this issue, and no verdicts in this category of cases have been reviewed.
In the republic, criminal cases related to social media activity are typically considered under articles on the dissemination of extremist materials, the promotion of terrorism, and other crimes provided for by criminal law.
