The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on August 5 to address the plight of Israeli hostages held by Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, according to Israel's Permanent Representative to the UN, Danny Danon.
The urgent meeting was called for following the dissemination of videos released by Hamas and its allied group, Islamic Jihad, showing emaciated hostages. Among them are Evyatar David and Rom Braslavsky, who were captured on October 7, 2023. According to Danon, the footage shows the hostages in grave psychological and physical condition.
Netanyahu appealed to the ICRC for help
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asked the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for assistance in providing humanitarian aid to Israeli hostages. This includes food and emergency medical care. The request was forwarded to the head of the ICRC's regional mission, Julien Lerisson.
In response, Hamas representatives stated their willingness to allow a humanitarian mission to reach the captives, provided permanent humanitarian corridors are opened for the Gaza Strip population. According to the radical group, the hostages receive the same food rations as the civilian population.
