Chinese Premier Li Qiang called on the BRICS countries to take the lead in advancing global governance reform. He made this statement during the session "Peace, Security and Global Governance Reform" at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The Chinese Premier called on the countries of the association to protect peace and tranquility throughout the world. According to him, the BRICS countries should maintain independence and self-reliance, focusing on development and strengthening economic growth, while promoting inclusiveness, exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations. He added that a joint China-BRICS research center to study productive forces of new quality will be established this year. The leaders of other states said that the BRICS countries should strengthen solidarity and coordination, protect the UN Charter, support multilateralism and promote common development, global governance, lasting peace and prosperity. The meeting adopted the Declaration of the 17th BRICS Summit. On the first day, participants discussed geopolitical conflicts and growing trade barriers. The Brazilian president, who chaired the meeting, said that it was necessary to jointly protect the main global values.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva: "Hard-won achievements, such as climate and global trade agreements, are at risk. The global health crisis, which has lasted for decades, is confronting the global health system with unprecedented challenges. We see that the resources to implement the 2030 Agenda exist, but are not available due to a lack of political priorities. It is always easier to invest in war than in peace."
