A drone launched from Iran crashed into Nakhchivan International Airport in Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani media reported.
A video posted on local social media shows a drone crashing into airport grounds, followed by an explosion.
According to the Report agency, educational institutions located in the immediate vicinity of the airport were evacuated.
The Ministry of Education of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic reported that teachers and students were evacuated from two schools located in the area.
"Teachers and students from two schools located in the area were evacuated. The evacuation was carried out to ensure the safety of the teaching staff and students," the department stated.
Later, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry issued a statement regarding the crash of Iranian drones at the airport in the city of Nakhchivan.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, drone attacks from the Islamic Republic of Iran struck the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan on the afternoon of March 5. One drone struck an airport terminal building, and another crashed near a school in the village of Shakerabad.
The statement said the attack damaged the airport building and injured two civilians.
"We strongly condemn these drone attacks launched from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which damaged an airport building and injured two civilians. This attack on the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan is a violation of the norms and principles of international law and contributes to increasing tensions in the region," the statement reads.
The agency demanded that Iran promptly provide a clear explanation of the incident, conduct an appropriate investigation, and take the necessary urgent measures to prevent similar attacks in the future.
"The Azerbaijani side reserves the right to take appropriate retaliatory measures," the Foreign Ministry added.
It was also reported that Iran's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Demirchilu, has been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A strong protest will be lodged with the Iranian side and a corresponding note will be delivered.
