A joint expedition to census the markhor (markhor) population is underway in the southern regions of Tajikistan. The research is taking place in the Dangara, Shamsiddin Shokhin, and Darvaz districts.
The expedition began on February 24 of this year. It involves researchers from the E.N. Pavlovsky Institute of Zoology and Parasitology and the Kh.Yu. Yusufbekov Pamir Biological Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan.
Representatives of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Forestry Agency under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and a number of hunting companies were also involved in the research.

The main goal of the expedition is to determine the distribution status and population of markhor in the south of the country.
The markhor is a vulnerable species. It is included in the IUCN Red List, Appendix II of the CITES Convention, and the Red Data Book of the Republic of Tajikistan.
According to experts, this rare animal is mainly found at altitudes from 700 to 2,700 meters above sea level.
Its distribution area covers the southwestern spurs of the Darvaz ridge – the areas of Yakhchipun and Yakhchisor, the Khazrati Shokh ridge – the Kushoniyon, Sarigor, Khirmanjo and Kisht mountains, as well as the Vakhsh ridge – the Sarsarak mountains.
