On April 2, the Parliament of Moldova approved in its final reading the law on the denunciation of the Agreement on the Establishment of the Commonwealth of Independent States, as well as the Alma-Ata Declaration.
The agreement in question was signed in Minsk on December 8, 1991, and its protocol, which was drawn up in Alma-Ata on December 21, 1991. A statement on the parliament's website stated that the draft law on the denunciation of these documents had been approved.
Once the law is approved by President Maia Sandu and enters into force, Moldova will be required to notify the CIS Executive Committee. This notification must be submitted one year before the country's actual withdrawal from the organization.
The law was adopted in two readings. The first reading took place on March 20.
Earlier, on January 19, Moldovan authorities announced the initiation of the process of denunciating key agreements that underlie the country's membership in the CIS. Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi explained that the government believes membership in the Commonwealth is incompatible with Moldova's status as a candidate for EU membership.
