Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to participants of the event marking the 55th anniversary of so-called Ping-Pong Diplomacy. The name refers to a historical episode when table tennis became a tool for improving relations between the United States and China. In April 1971, the US table tennis team, at the invitation of China, visited Beijing, where they played several friendly matches against Chinese athletes, becoming the first official American delegation to visit China since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. This signaled a rapprochement between the two countries, opening the door to normalizing relations between Beijing and Washington.
