Around 1,500 Islamic State (ISIS, an organization designated as terrorist in Tajikistan and officially banned) militants have escaped from a prison in northeastern Syria. Farhad Shami, a spokesman for the Kurdish coalition Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), told Rudaw TV.
He added that after their release, the militants joined the attacking groups.
Previously, it was reported that armed forces were storming the al-Shaddadi prison in the Syrian province of Al-Hasakeh, which holds thousands of ISIS militants.
On January 18, the SDF and the Syrian transitional government signed a fourteen-point agreement, ending a two-week government offensive in the northeast of the country.
The Syrian Democratic Forces agreed to immediately transfer control of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor provinces to the government. Government forces have already captured key facilities, including the Tabqa Dam and the al-Omar oil field.
