As of the evening of January 20, more than a million customers in Kyiv remain without power following Russian shelling. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this on his Telegram channel.
According to him, more than 4,000 apartment buildings in the Ukrainian capital remain without heat due to infrastructure damage. Zelenskyy demanded that local officials submit innovative proposals and strengthen coordination with businesses to redistribute electricity generation to stabilize the situation. "Tomorrow I expect a specific, clear list of actions and decisions," he said.
According to available data, the air temperature in Kyiv drops to minus 10 degrees Celsius.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko clarified that approximately 4,000 multi-story buildings out of the 5,635 that were disconnected following the attack on the capital on the night of January 20 remain without heat. However, according to him, utility services have already restored heat to more than 1,600 residential buildings.
Klitschko noted that the situation remains challenging, as most homes are being connected to heating for the second time since Russia's January 9 attacks on critical infrastructure.
The mayor also announced that the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) will donate two mini-heating and power plants to Kyiv. According to the signed memorandum, their delivery to the Ukrainian capital is scheduled for next week.
Furthermore, according to Klitschko, five cogeneration units designed for the simultaneous generation of electricity and heat have been installed in Kyiv. Two of them have already been commissioned, and commissioning work is nearing completion on the remaining three.
As of the morning of January 20, power, water, and heat outages in Kyiv were primarily reported on the Left Bank. Social infrastructure in these areas has been switched to an autonomous power supply.
It was previously reported that the Russian Armed Forces launched missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian territory on the night of January 20. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 342 targets were shot down or suppressed, including 315 unmanned aerial vehicles, 13 Kh-101 cruise missiles, and 14 Iskander ballistic missiles. The Kyiv region was reported to be the main target of the attack.
