The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan has received with deep sadness the news of the tragic loss of life and injuries resulting from the collision of two high-speed trains in the province of Cordoba, Kingdom of Spain, the Tajik Foreign Ministry reported .
The agency's telegram noted that the incident resulted in numerous casualties among passengers and was a major tragedy for the country.
The Tajik Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its sincere condolences and sympathy to the families and friends of the victims, as well as to all residents of friendly Spain. The ministry also wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the tragedy.
As a reminder, the train collision occurred on the evening of January 18. One of the trains, traveling from Málaga to Puerta de Atocha (Madrid's main railway station), derailed and collided with an oncoming train traveling from Madrid to Huelva.
At the time of the accident, there were approximately 300 passengers on the derailed train. The two trains alone could have carried up to 400 people, most of whom were Spanish citizens, according to Reuters.
According to RTVE, at least 39 people died in the accident, and another 152 were injured, five of whom are in critical condition, and 24 in serious condition. All victims were hospitalized.
The incident prompted a massive mobilization of emergency services in Spain, who continue to assist victims and deal with the aftermath of the accident.
