The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) plans to introduce a new national team tournament—the AFC Nations League. The organization's press service announced this.
The confederation has not specified the exact dates for the tournament, but it has been noted that it will take place in the near future. The initiative is being implemented as part of a strategy to strengthen the capacity of member associations and create a sustainable system of international matches.
As explained in the AFC's statement, the main obstacle to the development of national teams is the inability to fully utilize FIFA's international friendly windows. Limited availability of opponents, rising operating costs, and logistical complexities create additional challenges.
The new tournament aims to address these issues. The AFC Nations League will provide national teams with regular matches of comparable quality on FIFA dates, improve cost efficiency through centralized coordination, and create clearer opportunities for team athletic progress.
AFC Secretary General Datuk Seri Windsor John emphasized: "By introducing a structured competition platform into FIFA's international windows, with greater calendar stability and clear sporting incentives, we will ensure regular access to high-level matches while addressing the logistical and financial challenges of national teams. In addition to the sporting benefits, we are seeing significant interest from commercial partners in the tournament format, reflecting its appeal to fans, broadcasters, and other stakeholders, as well as its potential to offer a more entertaining and commercially attractive international football product."
It's worth noting that a similar format exists in Europe—the UEFA Nations League, where teams are divided into four divisions based on FIFA rankings. The tournament includes promotion and the opportunity to qualify for the European Championship, giving even underdogs a chance to compete in international tournaments.
