On August 5, a parallel meeting on "Promoting Regional Security and Cooperation through Expanded Trade and Transport Connectivity" was held at the Avaza National Tourist Zone in Turkmenistan as part of the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries. The meeting was chaired by the President of the Republic of Armenia, Vahagn Khachaturyan, and the Minister of Transport of the Republic of Tajikistan, Azim Ibrohim, according to the press service of the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan.
The meeting was attended by representatives from Austria, Nepal, Ethiopia, as well as international organizations such as UNESCAP, UNECE, and the SCO.
The crucial role of transport and connectivity today for the sustainable development of countries and the rapprochement of peoples was emphasized. It is no coincidence that in 2023, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution "Strengthening the links between all modes of transport to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals." The document proclaimed November 26 as World Sustainable Transport Day and 2026–2035 as the Decade of Sustainable Transport.
In his speech, Tajik Transport Minister Azim Ibrohim noted that Tajikistan, as a landlocked country located in the heart of Central Asia, acutely experiences structural constraints in global trade, which increase logistics costs and limit access to global markets. However, he stated, these very challenges push us toward even closer cooperation with our neighbors and international partners. They demonstrate the importance of regional cooperation, cross-border integration, and strategic connectivity as key foundations for peace and sustainable development.
"We must rethink our borders not as barriers, but as bridges to new opportunities that allow us to interact with the outside world on mutually beneficial terms," said the head of Tajikistan's Ministry of Transport.
The meeting was held in a spirit of mutual understanding and a desire to expand cooperation.
