A declaration on the settlement of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia was signed by the countries' leaders, Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan, on Friday in Washington, Interfax reports.
US President Donald Trump attended the signing ceremony. "This is a historic meeting between Armenia and Azerbaijan," he said at the opening of the signing ceremony.
The American president reported that Yerevan and Baku had managed to resolve an issue that had previously prevented a peace agreement. This issue concerns the use of the Zangezur corridor, a transport corridor between Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan region that runs through Armenia.
"We've resolved the key issue that's been holding up previous negotiations. This declaration enshrines (the corridor's name – IF), which is a great honor for me, and I didn't ask for it: 'The Trump Pathway for International Peace and Prosperity,'" Trump said.
As he explained, "this is a special transit zone that will allow Azerbaijan full access to its territory in the Nakhchivan region while fully respecting Armenia's sovereignty." "Armenia is also establishing an exclusive partnership with the United States to develop this corridor," the American president emphasized.
According to him, "significant infrastructure development by American companies" should be expected in the coming years. "They are very eager to enter these two countries. And they are going to spend a lot of money, which will bring economic benefits to all three of our countries," Trump noted.
"In addition, the United States is signing bilateral agreements with both countries to expand cooperation in energy trade and technology, including artificial intelligence, as well as energy," the US president said.
