On the night of Thursday, August 28, the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, came under heavy Russian shelling, killing eight people, according to Ukrainian authorities. Among the dead was a 14-year-old boy.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported 38 injuries, 30 of whom were hospitalized. Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko noted that three people were rescued from the rubble, but there is a high probability that more people remain trapped under the collapsed buildings.
According to Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, the injured included two brothers, aged 10 and 18. A 10-year-old boy was hospitalized. A 17-year-old boy was also injured.
Several districts of Kyiv were hit by a massive air strike. In the Darnytskyi district, a five-story residential building and a 16-story building were seriously damaged. "All floors of the five-story building have been preliminarily destroyed," the mayor reported. A private home and a kindergarten were also damaged. In other areas of the city, a 25-story residential building, several office buildings, and private homes were shelled.
An air raid alert was sounded on the evening of August 27, and the attacks continued throughout the night. According to local authorities, Kyiv was hit by drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on China and Hungary to respond to the new Russian strike. He said Russia's overnight attack was a "clear response" to calls for diplomacy and a ceasefire. "Russia chooses ballistic missile strikes over the negotiating table. It continues to kill rather than end the war," Zelenskyy said.
One person was injured in the attack in the Kyiv region. Mykola Kalashnik, head of the regional military administration, reported that a 33-year-old man in the Fastiv district suffered lacerations to the chest and right leg and was hospitalized. A private house and an apartment were damaged in the Brovarsky district, and a private house was damaged in the Fastiv district.
