On August 31 at 6:00 PM, the Renaissance Theatre Group will present the premiere of the musical "Rustam and Sukhrob" at the S. Aini Tajik State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. The production is based on the famous "Shahnameh" by Abulkosim Firdavsi and promises a vibrant synthesis of various musical genres, unusual stage designs, and a contemporary take on timeless themes.
The production's director, Sukhrob Usmonov, noted that the production will be a fresh take on the classic work. "This is not a traditional interpretation," he emphasized. "We've strived to unite the vocalists and ballet dancers into a single creative team. Audiences can expect a grandiose set design, expressive dramatic performances, and unexpected musical flourishes."
The creators paid special attention to the production's language. The play is being staged in Tajik, preserving the spirit of the original text. Sharofat Usmonzoda, who plays Tahmina, emphasized the premiere's significance in the context of the country's cultural life.
"Shahnameh is a gem of our literature, and it contains so many themes that are still relevant today that every storyline resonates deeply with the heart. It's gratifying that the premiere coincides with the initiative of the Founder of Peace and National Unity, the Leader of the Nation, and the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, to distribute this book to every family in the country. This is a good omen for us," the singer said.
As Emomali Rahmon has repeatedly emphasized, turning to national classics is key to spiritual and cultural self-determination. The directors are confident that the play "Rustam and Sukhrob" will attract the attention of both young people and seasoned theatergoers.
The musical drama will be the third production by the Renaissance Theatre Group, which launched this spring and has already won acclaim with productions of "The Lion King" and "Dracula." The project was implemented with the support of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Tajikistan.
