President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres during the general debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. This was reported by the presidential administration's press service.
The interlocutors discussed the progress of the multifaceted and productive cooperation between Tajikistan and the UN. Particular attention was paid to issues of global and regional security, as well as the need for joint efforts to overcome contemporary challenges.
According to Emomali Rahmon, the escalation of geopolitical contradictions, growing security threats, armed conflicts, terrorism and extremism, as well as economic and food crises, require continued effective and efficient interaction with the UN.
During the meeting, the parties reviewed the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the UN 2.0 initiatives, the Secretary-General's Vision for a Modern UN System, and its reform within the framework of the UN 80 program. They also discussed the initiative to create an "Early Warning System for All" and Tajikistan's global initiatives, particularly on the rational use of water resources, glacier conservation, and the fight against climate change.
It was regretfully noted that only about 35% of the Sustainable Development Goals will be achieved by 2030. The President of Tajikistan emphasized the importance of using modern digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, to accelerate progress in this area.
Particular attention was paid to preparations for the UN Water Conferences of 2026 and 2028, the second of which will be held in Dushanbe.
In addition, the parties emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation in countering terrorism and extremism, as well as in finding political and diplomatic solutions to armed conflicts in various regions of the world.
