On the night of October 20, the Russian Armed Forces launched strikes against Ukraine using three Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles from annexed Crimea and 60 Shahed, Gerber, and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched from Millerovo, Orel, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, and Cape Chauda in Crimea. This was reported by the Ukrainian Armed Forces (Ukrainian Armed Forces).
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the attack was repelled by aircraft, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire teams of the country's Defense Forces. By the morning of October 20, air defense forces had shot down and suppressed 38 UAVs of various types in the north, south, and east of the country. Three ballistic missiles and 20 attack UAVs were recorded as having hit 12 locations.
Ukraine's Minister for Communities and Territories Development, Oleksiy Kuleba, reported that logistics infrastructure, including railways and port facilities, was hit. A Ukrainian Railways traction substation was damaged in the Chernihiv region. Power engineers began restoration efforts, but Russian drones again attacked work sites. Thanks to the monitoring system, personnel were evacuated promptly, and there were no injuries. Backup locomotives were deployed to ensure train service.
Ukrzaliznytsia clarified that some trains on the Sumy route are delayed by over an hour due to locomotive replacement. Part of the port infrastructure was also damaged, but the fires were quickly contained, and there were no injuries. Several ports are temporarily unable to handle trains. According to media reports, the attacks may have affected the Yuzhny port in the Odesa region.
Power infrastructure in the Nizhyn district of the Chernihiv region was also hit. One facility was damaged, and over 2,700 customers were left without power. Power workers are working to clean up the mess, but the damage is estimated to be extensive.
On the morning of October 20, a Russian Geran-2 attack UAV attacked the village of Orelka in the Lozovsky district of the Kharkiv region. Private homes were damaged, a 42-year-old woman was injured, and her husband and children suffered psychological trauma.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, a strike caused a fire in a five-story building in the Sinelnyky district. Shops caught fire, and a community center was damaged. Russian troops also attacked Nikopol and the Pokrovsk community in the Nikopol district using FPV drones and artillery, damaging four private homes, six outbuildings, and a power line. There were no casualties.
