At least 92 people were killed and dozens wounded in a July 20 incident in the northern Gaza Strip. The people were killed while trying to receive humanitarian aid, the Associated Press reported, citing the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and local health authorities operating under the control of the Hamas group.
A convoy of 25 trucks carrying humanitarian aid headed into the northern Gaza Strip on Sunday morning, the WFP said. The convoy crossed the Zikim crossing, after which civilians began approaching. Israeli tanks and snipers opened fire on civilians, the organization said.
The UN condemned the incident, noting that the attack occurred immediately after the convoy passed through the last checkpoint. It was specified that the humanitarian aid was intended for residents of northern Gaza, where there is an acute shortage of food – according to the organization, the cost of a kilogram of flour in local markets exceeded 100 US dollars.
"Suddenly tanks surrounded us and started shooting," said local resident Ehab al-Zei. "We were trapped. There were shots, blows. We sat like that for about two hours. I haven't eaten bread for 15 days. It's better to die of hunger than from a bullet."
Wounded Nafiz al-Najjar said he saw shells and drones randomly attacking the crowd, and said his cousin and many others were killed in the shelling.
The shooting killed at least 79 people near the aid convoy, according to Gaza authorities. Another 13 people were killed near facilities run by the Gaza Humanitarian Fund (GHF) in the cities of Rafah and Khan Younis.
The IDF confirmed the shooting, saying it was triggered by a threat from "thousands of people" approaching military positions. The statement also said the Palestinian death toll could be "significantly inflated."
Meanwhile, the Israeli army continues to conduct military operations in the central areas of the Gaza Strip, particularly in the Deir el-Balah area. The operational situation remains tense, and the humanitarian situation is extremely grave.
The international community, including humanitarian organizations, expressed concern about the events and called on the parties to comply with international humanitarian law and protect civilians.
