A meeting of the Joint Steering Committee was held in Dushanbe, during which the implementation plan for the Joint Program "Transforming Food Systems to Improve Nutrition" was approved. This was reported by the National Information Agency of Tajikistan "Khovar" with reference to the Committee on Food Security under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The event was attended by representatives of relevant ministries and departments, international organizations and development partners. The meeting participants discussed the draft comprehensive action plan and developed recommendations for accelerating the implementation of the program aimed at improving the quality of nutrition and ensuring food security in the country.
First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Food Security Mahmud Shirindzhonzoda emphasized that ensuring food security is a priority task of the state and is being implemented in stages within the framework of the National Development Strategy until 2030. In this regard, the Law of the Republic of Tajikistan "On Food Security" was adopted, which defines the basic principles of state policy in this area as an important component of national security.
According to Shirinjonzoda, significant attention is paid to the implementation of a number of programs, including the Food Security Program of the Republic of Tajikistan for 2021–2025, the Food Safety Program for 2024–2028, as well as industry programs aimed at supporting domestic agricultural producers and developing sustainable food systems.
UN Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan Parvati Ramaswamy noted that the transformation of food systems plays a key role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. According to her, the UN's cooperation with the Government of Tajikistan in this area has been ongoing since 2021 and will be actively developed within the framework of the joint program.
"Transformation of food systems is one of the most effective tools for achieving sustainable development. We are pleased to continue our partnership with Tajikistan and are confident that joint efforts will lead to tangible results," the UN representative emphasized.
As noted by the meeting participants, the approval of the action plan for the transformation of food systems contributes to the achievement of one of the main strategic goals of the country – ensuring food independence and access of the population to quality food products. In this regard, all ministries and departments are called upon to actively participate in the implementation of the program.
