1. The European Union has prepared the "largest-ever" simultaneous application of several sanctions regimes against Russia, Brussels reported. In addition to the 17th package, the 18th has already been announced. 2. The European Union is preparing the "largest-ever" simultaneous application of several sanctions regimes against Russia, which will be announced on May 20 at a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council. This was reported by a high-ranking EU official at a briefing in Brussels on Friday, May 16. 3. The foreign ministers will approve restrictive measures against Russia within the framework of four sanctions regimes: for the war in Ukraine, for human rights violations, for hybrid warfare, and for the use of chemical weapons. 4. In total, more than 130 individual sanctions will be adopted, including against the Russian military-industrial complex, the "shadow fleet" and its accomplices, suppliers of sanctioned goods to Russia from third countries, as well as distributors of propaganda and disinformation. 5. Four sanctions regimes: 5.1. As part of the 17th package of sanctions for Russia's aggression in Ukraine, 75 new legal entities and individuals, as well as 200 "shadow fleet" vessels, will be added to the sanctions lists. Thus, the number of individuals on this EU sanctions list will exceed 2,500, and the number of vessels will exceed 300, the official said. 5.2. Within the framework of the EU sanctions regime for hybrid activity, sectoral measures will be introduced, as well as individual sanctions against 27 individuals and legal entities in the Russian Federation.

As part of the EU's global sanctions regime for human rights violations, another 28 individuals and legal entities from Russia will be added to the sanctions list.

In addition, the EU official reported on the planned application of sanctions against Russia for the use of chemical weapons. According to her, this concerns chemical means of suppressing mass riots, which are used by the Russian side as a means of waging war in Ukraine.6. The 18th package of sanctions

On the same day, May 16, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the European Union is already preparing new large-scale sanctions against Russia. These measures have not yet been approved by the EU Council and their discussion is only planned, so details about the timing and scope of the new sanctions are not yet known.

According to von der Leyen, who spoke in Tirana at the European Political Community summit, the new sanctions package will include restrictive measures against the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines, adding new names to the blacklist of Russian “shadow fleet” vessels, lowering the oil price ceiling, and additional sanctions against the Russian financial sector.

"We must increase the pressure on President Putin until he is ready for peace," the head of the European Commission said.
