In Tajikistan, 2,979 convicts have been released from prison as part of the implementation of the Amnesty Law. The first group of prisoners was released on July 6, the Main Directorate for the Execution of Criminal Punishments of the Ministry of Justice of Tajikistan told NIAT Khovar.

Those released served their sentences in correctional facilities in the cities of Nurek and Vahdat, as well as in the Yavan and Dusti districts. Among those released were 297 women.

The Amnesty Law was initiated by the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the country's state independence.

On June 16, the head of state, within the scope of his constitutional authority, submitted the draft law to the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of Tajikistan for consideration. Following its adoption, the document was signed.

The adoption of the Amnesty Law is seen as an expression of the Tajik President's humane policies. The law provides those who have committed crimes with the opportunity to reform, return to their loved ones, and begin constructive work.

In total, the law applies to 18,038 convicted persons.

Of these, 11,305 individuals are subject to release from prisons, penal settlements, and other non-custodial sentences. Another 6,733 individuals will have their unserved sentences reduced.

The law provides for expanded benefits for women and minors.

Of the 507 convicted women, 248 will be released from further sentences. For 259 women, their sentences will be reduced.

The amnesty also applies to 134 juvenile offenders. Of these, 99 will be released, and 35 will have their unserved sentences reduced.

The Law of the Republic of Tajikistan "On Amnesty" also applies to persons whose criminal cases are pending in the courts, as well as in the inquiry and investigation bodies.

The amnesty law is being implemented in stages.
