According to the Hydrometeorology Agency under the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, mudflows due to precipitation remain a risk from July 1 to 3 in the foothill and mountainous regions of the republican subordination, as well as in the Sughd and Khatlon regions. This was reported by the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan.
The department noted that July is traditionally one of the warmest months of the year. Temperatures in most parts of the country can reach almost 40 degrees Celsius, with the exception of mountainous areas. However, brief showers are expected on some days.
The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region is expected to see mostly clear weather. However, in the western part of the region, including the Darvaz district, temperatures will range from 29 to 36 degrees Celsius throughout July, significantly above the normal temperature of 16 to 21 degrees Celsius.
According to forecasters, the combination of precipitation, rising air temperatures, melting glaciers, and rising water levels in the Panj, Vakhsh, Varzob, and Zarafshan rivers could lead to localized mudflows.
Additionally, dust storms caused by strong southerly winds are expected in cities and districts of Khatlon Region, Districts of Republican Subordination, and Dushanbe from July 2 to 4. The Ministry of Transport noted that the combination of rain and dust contributes to fine particulate matter pollution, including those up to 10 micrometers (PM10) and up to 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5).
Due to the predicted adverse weather conditions, the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Tajikistan has instructed all organizations and institutions responsible for road maintenance to ensure 24-hour monitoring of their condition.
The Ministry also recommended that drivers and passengers avoid unnecessary travel on mountain and coastal roads in the coming days, check the weather forecast before traveling, exercise extra caution near riverbanks and in areas prone to rockfalls and landslides, and strictly adhere to traffic regulations.
