Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with US President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday.
Xi Jinping said that tectonic processes of global transformation unseen in a century are currently gaining momentum, and the international situation is undergoing changes and upheaval.
"Can China and the United States overcome the 'Thucydides Trap' and create a new paradigm for inter-power relations? Can we jointly confront global challenges and bring greater stability to the world? Can we jointly build a bright future for our bilateral relations, benefiting the well-being of our two peoples and the future of humanity? These are vital questions for history, for the world, and for all nations," Xi Jinping noted.
These, he added, are the questions of the era, which the leaders of the major powers must answer together.
"I look forward to working with you to set the course and steer the giant ship of China-US relations and make 2026 a historic, momentous year that opens a new chapter in China-US relations," Xi Jinping said.
"President Trump and I agreed to work to build constructive strategic stability in Chinese-American relations," Xi Jinping said.
This new definition, he said, will become a strategic guideline for bilateral relations for the next three years and beyond, and should be positively received by both the peoples of both countries and the international community.
"Constructive strategic stability" should be positive stability based on cooperation, favorable stability with moderate competition, permanent stability with manageable differences, and lasting stability that promises peace, Xi Jinping said.
Building constructive strategic stability in Chinese-American relations is not just a slogan, but concrete actions by both sides aimed at achieving a common goal, he emphasized.
The essence of Chinese-American trade and economic ties is mutual benefit and win-win, Xi Jinping said, noting that in the face of disagreements and frictions, consultations on an equal basis are the only correct choice.
Xi Jinping said that during the latest round of bilateral trade talks on Wednesday, economic and trade delegations from the two countries achieved "overall balanced and positive results."
"This is good news for the peoples of the two countries and the whole world," he said, calling on both sides to work together to maintain the good momentum that has not come easy.
Noting that China's doors will open wider and wider, Xi Jinping added that American companies are taking a deep part in China's reform and opening-up process and China welcomes the expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation between the United States and China.
"Both sides should implement the important consensus we have reached and properly utilize communication channels in the political and diplomatic spheres, as well as between the militaries of the two countries," Xi Jinping said.
Xi Jinping added that the two countries should also expand exchanges and cooperation in areas such as economy and trade, health, agriculture, tourism, people-to-people exchanges and law enforcement.
Regarding the Taiwan issue, Xi Jinping stressed that it is the most important issue in relations between China and the United States.
If this issue is properly resolved, bilateral relations can remain stable overall. Otherwise, clashes or even conflicts between the two countries could arise, putting relations between them in an extremely dangerous situation, Xi Jinping noted, calling on the US side to exercise particular caution regarding the Taiwan issue.
Maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is the biggest common denominator in China-US relations, Xi Jinping said, stressing that "Taiwan independence" and peace in the Taiwan Strait are as incompatible as fire and water.
D. Trump said he was honored to pay a state visit to China, calling Xi Jinping a great leader and China a great country. "I have tremendous respect for President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people," he said.
D. Trump expressed his willingness to work with Xi Jinping to strengthen communication and cooperation, properly resolve differences, and make bilateral relations better than ever before and achieve a bright future.
He said that the United States and China are the most important and powerful countries in the world, and many great and good things can be accomplished for both the two countries and the whole world through US-China cooperation.
D. Trump called on representatives of the US business community to expand cooperation with China.
The two leaders exchanged views on major international and regional issues, such as the situation in the Middle East, the Ukrainian crisis, and the Korean Peninsula.
They also agreed to provide mutual support to ensure the successful conduct of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting and the G20 summit this year.
