Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon stated that the country has created an effective platform for uniting international efforts to preserve glaciers. He made this announcement on April 22, speaking at the regional environmental summit "Shared Vision for a Sustainable Future" in Astana.
The head of state emphasized that Tajikistan accounts for up to 60 percent of Central Asia's water resources. He stated that this underscores the key role of the country's mountain ecosystems in ensuring water supply and sustainable development for the entire region.
Emomali Rahmon noted that glacier melting is currently intensifying worldwide. This, he emphasized, disrupts the water balance, poses environmental threats, and increases the risk of water-related natural disasters.
The President also recalled that the UN resolution on the International Decade for Action, "Water for Sustainable Development," is currently being implemented. He added that the first high-level international conference on glacier conservation, held last year in Dushanbe as part of the International Year for Glacier Conservation, served as an effective platform for consolidating efforts in this area.
