The presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States of America, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, held a telephone conversation during which they discussed a range of international issues, including the wars in Iran and Ukraine, according to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov.
According to him, the conversation took place on the evening of March 9 and lasted approximately one hour. The Kremlin reported that the meeting was businesslike, frank, and constructive. The talks were initiated by Donald Trump.
The main topics of discussion were the US-Israel war in Iran, as well as Russia's war against Ukraine.
According to Ushakov, Vladimir Putin made a number of proposals aimed at a political and diplomatic settlement of the conflict surrounding Iran.
Also, according to the Kremlin, Putin praised the mediation efforts of the United States and Donald Trump personally in attempts to peacefully resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
During the conversation, Donald Trump reiterated his interest in a swift ceasefire and a long-term settlement to the conflict in Ukraine.
According to the Kremlin, this was the first telephone conversation between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump since December 2025.
Washington has not yet commented on the telephone conversation with Putin.
Later, Donald Trump said at a press conference in Florida that Vladimir Putin had offered to help resolve the conflict with Iran, but that the main part of the conversation was devoted to the war in Ukraine.
"We talked about Ukraine, and it's just a never-ending struggle. There's tremendous hatred between President Putin and President Zelenskyy; it's like they can't get along. But I think the conversation on that issue was positive," Donald Trump said.
Speaking about Putin's offer of assistance on the Iran issue, the US president added: "I said, 'You'd be more useful if you helped end the war in Ukraine. That would be helpful.' But it was a good conversation."
During the conversation, the leaders also touched upon the issue of Venezuela, including in the context of the situation on the global oil market.
