Tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate as the war between the US, Israel, and Iran enters its seventh day. Israel launched airstrikes on the Iranian capital in response to Iran's overnight missile and drone attacks on Tel Aviv.
After midnight, the sounds of fighter jets were heard in the skies over Tehran. Soon after, the city was rocked by seven or eight major explosions.
Following the explosions, thick smoke billowed from various parts of the capital, and flashes of flame illuminated the sky. Footage released from the region reported that the explosions were felt across the city, and sirens sounded in some areas.
The strikes were reportedly aimed at Iranian military infrastructure. It is believed that military installations and strategic points around Tehran may have been targeted. Previously, it was also reported that Israeli and US forces carried out airstrikes on various targets in Iran, including the capital, where large explosions had already been recorded.
Israeli and US drones also reportedly attacked the Red Crescent building in the Iranian city of Mahabad. According to media reports, one employee was injured and hospitalized.
Iran has postponed appointing a successor to slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei after US and Israeli claims that the new leader could also be a target, The New York Times reported, citing two Iranian officials.
Iran, for its part, claimed to have carried out drone strikes on Israeli and US military targets. According to the country's Air Defense Command, the drones attacked the Ramat David airbase and a radar station at the Meron airbase in northern Israel.
There were also reports of a drone attack on a US military base in Kuwait.
Pentagon Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the US will no longer limit military action against Iran to "politically correct rules of war." He said previous restrictions had constrained operations, but now the US military will take a more assertive approach.
Furthermore, US Central Command reported the destruction of an Iranian drone carrier. Footage of the strike on the vessel, which, according to the US, was comparable in size to World War II-era aircraft carriers, was released.
Iran has reportedly launched missile strikes on Tel Aviv and its surrounding areas in recent days. The attacks have resulted in deaths and injuries.
Due to mutual strikes, air defense systems in the region are regularly activated, and the level of alert is raised in many Middle Eastern countries.
According to preliminary data, since the beginning of US and Israeli military operations against targets in Iran, the conflicts have gradually spread to a wider area, and hundreds of people have already died in the region.
Experts note that the series of explosions in Tehran could indicate the conflict has entered a new phase. They believe the parties may further escalate the scale of military operations.
The developments are heightening fears of a potential wider conflict in the Middle East.
