The closing ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games took place in the Italian city of Verona on Monday night, Interfax reports.
The gala event took place in the historic Arena di Verona. The theme of the ceremony was "Beauty in Action." The program featured Italian artists, including singer Achille Lauro, actress Benedetta Porcaroli, and dancer Roberto Bolle.
The ceremony included a parade of athletes, including those competing in a neutral capacity.
The Olympic flame was extinguished simultaneously in two places: at the Arch of Peace in Milan and in Piazza Angelo Dibona in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
The Olympic flag was also handed over to the next host country, France, which will host the Olympic Games in 2030.
During the Games, 116 medal events were awarded. Norway took first place in the medal standings, winning 41 medals, 18 of which were gold. The United States came in second with 33 medals, including 12 gold. Third place went to the Netherlands, which won 20 medals, 10 of which were gold.
More than 2,900 athletes from 92 national teams participated in the Winter Olympic Games. For the first time in the history of the Winter Olympics, representatives from Benin, the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, and the United Arab Emirates participated.
