Inter-MFA consultations on "Human Rights Issues in the Context of Cooperation on International Platforms" took place on February 17 at the Commonwealth of Independent States headquarters, the press service of the Organization's Executive Committee reported.
Representatives from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and the CIS Executive Committee took part in the consultations.
During the meeting, participants emphasized the need to ensure the leading role of United Nations Member States in all areas of the Organization's reform processes, including the human rights dimension.
The importance of working together to counter attempts to reformat the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from a structural unit of the UN Secretariat into an independent organization or agency not accountable to states was noted.
Representatives of the CIS foreign affairs agencies agreed that one of the reasons for the difficult financial situation of the Human Rights Council was the uncontrolled expansion of its agenda to include non-core issues.
Furthermore, the participants in the consultations emphasized the need to deepen multilateral cooperation and coordinate the efforts of CIS states to pursue an agreed-upon policy aimed at ensuring mutually respectful and constructive cooperation in the field of human rights, as well as countering the further politicization of the work of UN human rights bodies and mechanisms.
Experts confirmed the importance of continuing joint work to preserve historical truth and counter attempts to revise the results of World War II.
Representatives of the CIS states agreed to continue to provide mutual support to candidates nominated by Commonwealth countries for election to human rights and other UN bodies of limited membership.
