Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov signed a decree dismissing Kamchybek Tashiev from his posts as Chairman of the State Committee for National Security (GKNB) and Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers.
The head of state explained his decision by saying he was acting in the "interests of the state," presidential press secretary Askat Alagozov told the BBC Kyrgyz Service.
As the press secretary noted, Sadyr Japarov does not want to allow a split in society, including between government agencies.
Immediately after Tashiev's dismissal, the President of Kyrgyzstan issued orders regarding changes to the structure of the State Committee for National Security. The Border Service was removed from the committee and established as a separate agency, and the 9th Service of the State Committee for National Security was transformed into the State Security Service, reporting to the President.
Kamchybek Tashiev is currently undergoing treatment in Germany. He reportedly learned of his resignation after the presidential decree was issued.
Kamchybek Tashiev, 57, is a close associate of the Kyrgyz president. After Sadyr Japarov came to power in October 2020, he headed the State Committee for National Security and became the country's deputy prime minister.
Previously, Tashiev was an opposition politician under previous presidents of Kyrgyzstan. In the 2010s, he and Japarov were involved in a case involving an attempted coup. Both politicians were held in custody during their trials.
