Member countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) are coordinating contracts to supply weapons to Tajikistan's border troops, CSTO Secretary General Taalatbek Masadykov said in an interview posted on the "CSTO Allies" website.
"A key task for the CSTO will be the implementation of the targeted interstate program to strengthen the Tajik-Afghan border, approved by the leaders of our countries. The decision on this program was made by the leaders of the states in Astana in November 2024," Masadykov noted.
He clarified that the first stage of the program involves clarifying and coordinating the lists of weapons, military equipment, and border security equipment to be supplied to Tajikistan's border troops within the participating countries. Suppliers are currently being identified and the relevant contracts are being finalized.
According to the CSTO, Tajikistan has the longest border with Afghanistan among Central Asian countries—1,344 kilometers—and directly borders four northeastern provinces of the neighboring state. Following the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in 2021, the Taliban movement took power in the country. Tajikistan notes that militants from various terrorist organizations operate in Afghanistan, including its northeastern regions.
