US President Donald Trump announced the formation of a "Peace Council" to oversee the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. He made the announcement on Thursday, January 15, emphasizing that this structure would be a key element of his peace plan for the region, along with the deployment of international forces. The US President will personally chair the Peace Council.
"I am deeply honored to announce the creation of the Peace Council. The composition of the Council will be announced shortly, but I can confidently say that it is the greatest and most prestigious council ever created, anywhere, at any time," Trump said on the social media platform TruthSocial.
The creation of the Peace Council was announced shortly after the formation of the 15-member Palestinian technocratic administration, which was given authority to manage day-to-day life in the post-war Gaza Strip. The new administration will operate under the supervision of the Peace Council. "As Chairman of the Peace Council, I support the newly appointed Palestinian technocratic government," the US President noted.
According to The Telegraph newspaper, the Peace Council will most likely include representatives from Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt and Turkey.
Earlier, on January 14, US Special Presidential Envoy Steven Witkoff announced the transition to the second phase of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. This phase includes the disarmament of Hamas and the deployment of the International Stabilization Force (ISF) to the region to support the Palestinian police.
In December 2025, Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by the European Union and the United States, announced its willingness to lay down its arms if a number of conditions were met, including the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip. Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya stated that the presence of Hamas weapons was due to the occupation and aggression, and that if the occupation ended, they would be transferred to state control.
